Home & Living

Self-test:
    Example & memory tip

When I get home, the first thing I do is wash my hands.

Usage 家 reads いえ for the building and うち for your own home as a place you belong. うちの会社 even means 'my company'.

Remember it 家 = 宀 (a roof) over 豕 (a pig). Livestock kept under the roof — an old idea of a household.

    Example & memory tip

I opened the window of the room to air it out.

Usage Rooms are counted with 部屋 or with 間 (ま) in flat listings: 2LDK means two rooms plus living, dining and kitchen.

    Example & memory tip

    Example & memory tip

I clean the bathroom thoroughly every day.

Usage Important cultural difference: in Japan the bath room and the toilet are usually separate rooms. 浴室 or お風呂 is for bathing only, never for the toilet.

Remember it 浴 (to bathe) + 室 (room). The bathing room — and only that.

    Example & memory tip

Excuse me, where is the toilet?

Usage Ask for トイレ or the politer お手洗い (おてあらい). Do not ask for the 'bathroom' — 浴室 is where you bathe, and asking for it will confuse people.

Remember it Clipped from English 'toilet', three mora:

    Example & memory tip

    Example & memory tip

    Example & memory tip

    Example & memory tip

I hung the washing outside to dry.

干す (ほす) = to hang out to dry — most Japanese homes air-dry rather than use a tumble dryer.

なかなか with a negative = 'not easily, not readily'. つける = to switch on, 消す = to switch off.

Remember it 日 (day) + 常 (constant, usual). What holds constant day to day.
